Joshua Newell

Joshua Newell is an associate professor in the School of Natural Resources and Environment at the University of Michigan with expertise in human-environment geography. His research areas cover urban sustainability, resource consumption, environmental and social justice, focusing on urban infrastructure, form, consumption patterns, and governance mechanisms. Newell's research approach is multi-scalar and integrative, drawing from geography, urban planning, industrial ecology, and spatial analysis. He holds a Ph.D. in Geography from the University of Washington and a BA in History from Brown University. Previously, he held positions as an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan, Research Assistant Professor at the University of Southern California, Project Director at Friends of the Earth, and English Teacher at Jumonji High School.
