Kara Elliott-Ortega is the Chief of Arts and Culture for the City of Boston, focusing on cultural organizing and the intersection of arts and culture with community development. She holds a Master’s Degree in City/Urban, Community, and Regional Planning from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a B.A. in English Literature and Human Rights from the University of Chicago.

Thrilled to formally announce Un-Monument, a City of Boston program supporting 30 public art initiatives and over 50 artists in collaboration with local curatorial + public programming partners. Un-Monument brings temporary monuments and free public programming to neighborhoods across Boston - asking artists and the public who and what we should memorialize in our city, how art can create belonging and civic engagement through our public spaces, and what innovative forms this storytelling should take. Funded with a $3M grant from the Mellon Foundation, it is the largest public art investment in Boston to date.
This builds on decades of advocacy and work led by our artists and community members. Major shout out to Karin Goodfellow for being an arts champion over many years in City Hall, bringing attention and resources to public art in our city. And a huge thank you to Mayor Michelle Wu, the Mellon Foundation, all of the partners, the artists, our advisory group, the Boston Art Commission, the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture and many more.
