Kate Canales is a Professor of Practice and the Department Chair in the Department of Design at the University of Texas at Austin's School of Design and Creative Technologies.1 She joined UT Austin in the summer of 2018 and oversees strategy, operations, governance, curriculum, and experience design for all four design degrees (B.A., B.F.A., M.A., and M.F.A.) as well as the Center for Integrated Design.1

Under her leadership, the department has focused on expanding student access to design education and broadening the definition of design work. Some of her notable achievements include:

  1. Eliminating the portfolio requirement for undergraduate admissions to diversify the student body.1
  2. Developing and implementing an M.A. in Design focused on Health in partnership with UT's Dell Medical School.1
  3. Renewing the M.F.A. in Design program after a two-year hiatus.1

Prior to her role at UT Austin, Canales founded and led the M.A. in Design and Innovation (MADI) at SMU's Lyle School of Engineering.1 She has also worked as a professional designer at renowned firms like IDEO and frog.1
