I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about Brian Chesky’s talk at #config2023, some really doubting the wisdom of a design-led org or a centralized authority like Steve Jobs at Apple.

What I’ve noticed in my experience in technology is that while UX and Product Design espouse that they are the natural descendants of architecture and industrial design, they lack a really important role that is common across the rest of the design industry - Creative Director.

The creative director is the person that sets an inspiring vision, crafts a strategy to make it real, and is empowered to edit out any work that distracts from that focus. It’s how you get teams working together to make things that feel like a collection with a specific singular voice. It’s how you make sure that you ensure quality across a set of products. And it’s how you hire and build a team with talented people excited to make good work. That was what Steve Jobs was at Apple. It’s how Brian Chesky is functioning now.

What people fail to realize is that a really great creative director can pay huge dividends for the business. Because when people see a high-quality product, they are often willing to pay a premium for it. That is profit margin.

And it’s why, while aesthetics are often written off as a surface layer, they serve a very important purpose to prospective customers. I’m definitely appreciating Juan J. Ramirez recent thoughts on aesthetics. Good or pleasing aesthetics are often a first signal of quality, whether or not we are explicitly aware of it.

I’m coming to a point in my career where I’m excited to see software design starting to fill this gap that I’ve noticed for a while. They’re finally starting to adopt some of the key creative practices I appreciated during my time designing physical products. Design systems alone won’t create cohesion. It takes carefully considered organizational design. I hope other companies can see the wisdom of this structure.

It's been over 2 years since I've written about design and tech, but I was inspired to write again after playing around with AI, ChatGPT, and Midjourney. Check it out: https://lnkd.in/ghyhdBWA #design #ai #tech
