I've spent most of my career building companies and new technologies rather than working in academia. My educational journey has been anything but direct. I got my BS in CS when I was 46, and my MS in CS when I was 49, after working in the industry as a software, systems, or network engineer for 25 years. With that being said, I have not made many connections within the academic world, so I have a little challenge when I need recommendations for an academic application ( you don't have to be in academia to write the application, just someone who can vouch for my abilities ). After completing my MS at the end of 2022, I promised my wife that I would wait a year before applying to PhD programs, and guess what, it's been about 13 months, so here I am. My request is specifically to my connections that I've had direct working or academic relationships with. Would you be willing to write a recommendation for my PhD application? I'm not exactly sure what is required, though I imagine it is to verify my aptitude to be a successful PhD candidate. Please DM me if you are willing to take the leap. I only need 3 recommendations, and it would probably be required within the next month or so.

Thank you in advance.

I'm afraid that the hype behind ChatGPT will lead to a vacuum of interest in NLP and Deep Learning when it's discovered by the general public that its practical usefulness is limited and the things it gets wrong are really, really difficult to get right computationally speaking. ChatGPT is not an AGI, but it's covered by the media, and the lay public like it is. My prediction is that what will win in the near term will be highly targeted agents that specialize in generating content that can be validated with high accuracy by experts, helping humans extend their access to this knowledge with high confidence. For example, have a pre-trained agent that has ingested all of the tax laws implemented by the IRS, and allow humans to consult with the agent for tax law questions in a real human voice, as if they were speaking with a tax attorney. The same technique that OpenAI used with PPO (Proximal Policy Optimization) to reward responses from the GPT-3 DaVinci model to mimic human chat can be done with domain experts to create highly useful agents.
