Highlights
Last week we took our 10-year-old to Dabo Sweeney's Youth Football Camp. I think I got as much from it as the kids did... lessons for life, work, and sports. Teaching leadership while playing football.
Over 350 boys and a handful of girls (they rocked it) from 2nd to 7th grade transcend onto Clemson University to replicate a day in the life at training camp. Lots of drills, fun practices, eat where the athletes eat. It’s no joke – Day 1 is 8 am to 10 pm followed by a full day on Day 2.
The kids are the customers and the parents are the lurking spectators corraled by the bullhorn when in the way. Dabo’s entire coaching staff and over 50 current and former players work with the kids. It was incredible to watch this fine-tuned system at work down to the minute.
At the end of each day Dabo, coaches, and athletes share stories. I think it was every parent's secret pleasure to watch their sleepy kids at attention for over 30 minutes at 9:30 pm listening to Dabo and his staff share words of wisdom before playing the day’s sizzle real on the big screen in Death Valley.
Those talks were about everything other than football. I found myself leaning in with every minute of conversation, taking in their words and realizing how they applied not just to aspiring kids and athletes but to people at any age in life and in work. And most certainly to entrepreneurs.
When Dabo came to Clemson thirty years ago he started teaching BEST as the standard. His thesis: If we are going to be THE best one day, we have to learn how to be OUR best. When you focus on being THE best, that means you are comparing yourself to someone else. My favorite quote he said: “Comparison is the thief of joy”.
To become your BEST starts with 4 things:
Belief: Dabo says growth follows belief. If your beliefs are negative, your thoughts will be negative which will transcend to your words, actions, and habits. We are in a world of we can't / it can't be done. That is HARD to hear day in and day out. You have to believe in yourself, your future, and your success.
Effort: You have to put in the work. Talent is nature, skill is developed. Your work ethic and habits will line up with what you want if you put in the work.
Sacrifice: Dabo said he's seen it so many times that people give up what they want the most for what they want in the moment. If you want to be your best, you have to sacrifice to become the best version of yourself.
Toughness: You can’t be your best without toughness. Many things are out of your control, bad things can happen. Life can and will rob you of your beliefs, so that's where toughness comes in. When the doubt creeps in, you have to believe.
I know there are many versions of these principles by many incredible leaders. But it's easy to forget, as we get wrapped up in the noise rather than the signals. I didn’t expect to leave my son's camp with anything more than a great experience and some merch. I’m so grateful to have gotten all that and more.
