On Thursday, July 13th, a group of Republican attorneys issued a letter to the nation's largest companies warning them against race-based preferences in hiring, promotions and contracting. As a retired executive from a Fortune 100 company, I respectfully disagree with the argument that race-based preferences in hiring, career advancement, and supply chain management are inherently discriminatory. These initiatives address long-standing imbalances and barriers that have systematically prevented certain groups from accessing equal opportunities. The aim is not to provide an unfair advantage, but rather to level the playing field and create a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace that reflects our society. Furthermore, research has repeatedly shown that diversity benefits organizations by increasing innovation, improving decision-making, and enhancing financial performance. While avoiding all forms of discrimination is crucial, we must recognize the need for measures that promote genuine equality. Achieving workplace diversity is not simply about implementing race-based policies and programs, but about fostering a culture of belonging, inclusivity, and mutual respect. Only then can we truly maximize our efforts.
