Highlights
Happy NOT international womens day this 9th March! On this day, a working day with women still making up a large percentage of the workforce, and the word empower isn’t being thrown around…
This is a prompt to PAY women equally. Also no shitty free emotional labour, no extra ‘admin’, no female tax, no free because ‘it’s the right thing to do’, no ‘campaigns’ where only companies benefit and not women providing the service, no extra work without extra pay because they’re nice and don’t push back.
PROMOTE women. No free-of-charge additional ‘social’ or ‘organiser’ roles which takes up tonnes of time but doesn’t get women into leadership. Sponsor women to get promoted. Spotlight women leaders and their qualities. Give credit. Give the stage, the microphone, the lead roles, and for goodness’ sake when a woman is talking, stop interrupting.
HIRE women. Yeah they took some time off to produce the miracle of birth. Guess what. While kids miss out time with their father, who probably gets little to no paternity leave, their mother loses significant earning potential. Most women have 1-2 kids. That’s not a liability. That’s dimensionality. That’s a responsible, intelligent, ambitious, go-getting member of the workforce you’re passing on. Hire them.
INVEST in women’s companies. In some parts of the world, there are more women-run small businesses. Women are not a minority. Women are able to serve needs that others overlook. Women are excellent leaders and money-makers. Stop with the bro-ing and excuses. Do the work and find women to fund.
The theme this year is break the bias. To do that, you need to act. Look at your bottom line and move it so that it is proof your women have equity. Without action, all your videos and socials are unethical tokenism and gaslighting. Yes, they are important for awareness but come on. We’re all aware. We have been for a long time. Please make a lot of videos and socials about what you’re DOING instead.

When I first ran a tech startup in 2013, just over 2% of VC funding went to women. When I left in 2020, after huge global movements, that number rose to 2.2%.
At this rate, if I get to 100 years old, I'd live to see 3.8% of funding go to women.
I have faith that the rate will pick up - things are thankfully never linear - but we aren’t there yet. So in the meantime, we shan’t quieten down. Not when half the world remains oppressed for no good reason.
If you can’t fund a women-led or women/focused business, or talk to peers who can, mentor young women leaders, buy their products and services, talk about their businesses, send them encouragement, repost articles supporting equality, or even just spread news when a woman does well…
… You CAN still do something.
Watch women pitch their businesses. Take part in the fire and change they are bringing to the world. As a gorgeous bonus, see these crazy speakers:
