Several times a year I get an email or LinkedIn message from some company saying I’ve been nominated as the Top 80 under 80 personal injury attorneys whose name start with K in the southeastern portion of my county. They just need some money for me to claim this incredibly prestigious accolade. But an award is not real if you have to pay for it.

I’m sure these scams exist in other industries, but they feel particular pervasive in law where attorneys are trying to set themselves apart from competition in a field where it can be difficult for consumers to tell much difference. When my friends are looking for a lawyer, I tell them to check Google reviews. Listen to what past clients have to say, not a company selling trophies.

As a rule, I don’t publicize the amount of money for which my cases settle. Not only does it strike me as distasteful – someone was badly injured – but it misleads future clients as to the value of their cases. Clients want to know the value of their claim, but seeing how much someone else got isn’t helpful.

A personally injury settlement is, well, personal. It accounts for financial damages (property, medical bills, lost wages) and general damages (aka pain and suffering). The same injury can impact two people very differently. Medical bills for the same injury can vary greatly depending on insurance and location. A shoulder injury might allow an accountant to keep working but leave a pilot unable to operate a plane. A young person may heal more quickly or completely than an older patient and experience pain for a shorter duration.

When a lawyer puts on their website that they got a client $1,000,000 for an injury, they aren’t breaking it down. How much of that was medical bills? Lost wages? These things matter. Big numbers might make for good advertising and flexing on social media, but it doesn’t help your future clients have realistic expectations.
