You may feel awkward seeing this non-English post, but a quick context—I've been dreaming of mentoring/supporting young professionals or those who want to come to the US and need tips and support. With more Koreans using LinkedIn these days, I believe it's a good time to connect with community from my homeland!

“What’s your tip for junior designers to get a job in this market condition?🤔”
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of speaking at a fireside chat Academy of Art University. It was amazing to feel the passion and receive many questions, which reminded me of the current job market, especially for junior designers or freshers. In today's rapidly shifting job market, many young designers who wants to start their cureer might feel disheartened by the tough situation. I decided to summarize what I shared yesterday, as it could be helpful since I know many more people are going through this atm.
1️⃣ Define what type of designer you are. Be more specific than just your specialty—mention areas such as onboarding, B2B, ads, or fintech, based on your experience or portfolio. Develop a strong personal brand that reflects your unique design style and skills. This will make you stand out to potential employers and clients in a crowded market.
2️⃣ Use various channels to build your network. Don't hide; expose yourself. There are still many doors open. e.g Use social media to expose yourself, write articles about your design process, projects, or attend design awards which may reach to the hidden doors.
3️⃣ Find opportunities to collaborate (even if unpaid). Hiring managers care about your story and product thinking, not just immediate impact. Show your collaboration and storytelling skills. Gain experience and build your portfolio through internships and side projects. Use every task as an opportunity to learn and improve your craft. No matter how small the job, your efforts show dedication and grow your abilities. These experiences are crucial for developing skills that set you apart from other candidates. When you get an opportunity, tell the story of your thought process and show your collaboration process.
4️⃣ Your first job doesn’t have to be at your dream company. Our career is longer than we think, and you don’t need to be at the company you really want to work for right away. Learn what you can anywhere, and use that knowledge to prepare for future opportunities. Step in and do your best to create the greatest portfolio.
5️⃣ Prove your worth. If you land an internship or contract job, go above and beyond to demonstrate your value. Be proactive, bring fresh ideas to the table, and make yourself indispensable; then hidden doors may open.
6️⃣ Remember, you’re not alone. Many designers are navigating the same challenges. Connecting with others can provide support and open up new opportunities. Don't be jealous of those who progress faster. You've spent more time, learned more, and grown stronger. That will be your skill
Lastly expect many rejections, but you will eventually hear a 'Yes' if you don't drop, no matter what. It might sound cheeshy, but it's true. Keep pushing forward, stay connected, and success might be just around the corner!
Have you gone through this tough time or are you a hiring manager? If you have any other tips? Please share them🙏
