“What? I didn’t understand any of that.”

Here’s the fact of the matter:

Speaking faster is not always better.

I don't know any presentation coaches who would disagree with me when I say that:

The QUALITY of your communication is more important than how many words you say.

Here's why--

If you speak too quickly, especially if they’ve never heard your voice, or you're talking about something complicated, or the topic is stressful, or the information is critical...

You will only end up wasting time.

I guarantee you that when you speak too quickly, people will not understand everything you say.

You'll waste time repeating, rephrasing or explaining during the presentation.

You'll waste time afterward following up with countless emails and message inquiries since no one asked you to slow down.

Do you want to save time and frustration?

Here are some ways to adjust the way that you speak so that you can communicate effectively and be understood THE FIRST TIME.

These techniques go beyond an exasperated "SLOW DOWN!"

Follow this advice, and you will help you give listeners a chance to tune in to the way you speak.

And listeners won't be the only ones who will benefit!

Do you speak quickly out of habit?

If so, you might be creating more communication problems for yourself.

You may think you need to speak quickly to say everything in a short time, but this often leads to misunderstandings.

Here are 4 reasons why talking too quickly can be problematic:

😕 People might not understand your words.

Unfamiliar terms or unclear pronunciation can cause confusion. If these words are crucial, your message might get lost.

Take your time to ensure key words are clear.

🤔 The concept might be unfamiliar.

Even if you're familiar with what you're saying, your audience may not be.

Slow down and allow them time to understand.

😳 Listening to fast talkers requires sustained concentration.

Your job is to make yourself understood, not just to say words.

Fast speech can overwhelm tired or distracted listeners, making it hard for them to focus.

Consider the last time that you had to really understand something, but you were already tired, worried about something you had to do later on, or were otherwise distracted by notifications on an electronic device.

Your concentration was easily broken, and you found your mind wandering to other topics, places, screens, or scenarios.

Help people concentrate by speaking at an easier rate.

🙄 Fast talking without pausing makes it difficult for people to interrupt and ask for clarification.

Be on your audience's team. Allow pauses for them to ask questions or provide feedback. This fosters better communication and understanding.

Practice pausing, calming yourself, and speaking more slowly to help your audience grasp your message the first time.
