Highlights
I’ve been on the road a lot recently, and off again to Jane App HQ in Vancouver tomorrow. It’s finally summer here in Park City, and got a chance to enjoy an incredible sunset ride last night. I was jet lagged and sleep deprived, but watching the sun sink below the Wasatch Mountains filled my cup.
Our professional lives might bring us lots of time in airports and offices… but this is your reminder:
Always make time for the mundane yet glorious daily moments of the place you call home.
I just finished my orthodontics + maxillofacial surgery journey as an adult. I'm super excited about my teeth, but as someone who works in healthcare I keep asking myself, "Why doesn't traditional U.S. healthcare operate more like my orthodontics and maxillofacial surgery journey?"
With my orthodontics, I knew exactly what it would cost up front, and was given options as to how I would pay. I was able to thankfully use an adult orthodontics employer benefit to defray some of that cost.
Every time I came in, I never waited longer than 5 minutes. The staff knew me by name, knew my dog's name, and made time to answer my questions or chat with me. They would gladly print imaging for me or take updated photos for no cost. I could look at my chart with them. If something broke or was poking, I was able to come in almost always same-day to get it corrected. I wasn't nickel-and-dimed for things like retainers or special brackets. They even threw in things like professional teeth whitening for my home use.
My maxillofacial surgeon and I texted one another -- his staff was tops and I always felt informed. He brought in another surgeon as well, who was also excellent. His staff worked seamlessly with my orthodontist to get my prior authorization submitted (and resubmitted).
Personal touch. Transparent, bundled pricing (and, when insurance was involved, clear handling of the process vs. kicking it onto me.) Interoperability and care coordination. Kindness and professionalism.
Despite having major surgery on my face and dealing with braces for 2+ years, I'd say the entire journey was more pleasant than most healthcare experiences I've had for far more routine procedures or tests.
