Laura Mercer is a member of the Cape Breton Music Industry Cooperative (CBMIC) and has a background in music education and conducting. She was a band teacher in the school system for many years and founded the Second Wind Community Band in 1993/1994.2 Laura also conducted the local community orchestra.2

As a co-conductor of the Second Wind Concert Band, Laura Mercer has been involved in keeping the group active even during challenging times. In March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic began, she and the band had to adapt their practices and performances.3
