For the past week, I've found myself revisiting this amazing quote from Professor Tom Ginsburg, the convocation speaker at my daughter's graduation from the University of Chicago. Professor Ginsburg said “At its best, we strive to be tough on ideas and kind to people; whereas much of other discourse these days is the opposite: tough on people, weak on ideas.”
As I thought about how to apply this concept as a leader, it occurred to me that the concept is quite easy to grasp...but I had a nagging concern that it would be equally difficult to implement.
It finally hit me why this concern persisted. There are two parties involved in an interpersonal interaction (at minimum) - the person positing an idea, and the person responding to that idea. This quote nobly guides how the respondent should behave....be tough on the idea and kind to the person. An approach that we can all agree upon hopefully.
But the moment of truth that will determine whether an interaction becomes productive (or not) occurs not only with the initial response, but upon the reaction of the person receiving the feedback. If that person fails to understand when a respondent is constructively challenging an idea versus challenging the person, the entire interaction can (and often will) turn south very quickly.
My takeaway for leaders who want to embrace the concept of "tough on ideas and kind to people" is to remember that your team members may need to be educated on how to provide feedback....but they may also need to be trained and educated (or simply reminded) on how to receive and evaluate challenging feedback. To be open to constructive debate versus immediately switching to defensive or combat mode.
If a team can effectively implement the "tough on ideas and kind to people" approach - encompassing both giving and receiving feedback on ideas in a constructive manner - decision-making can only improve.
Thank you Professor Ginsburg for such a thought-provoking speech. And congratulations to my oldest daughter Bailey Tucker for excelling in such a challenging and meaningful environment. I couldn't be prouder and more excited for your future.
