#NelsonMandelaDay is a perfect time to tell you about what I've been up to over the past six weeks. As part of my graduate work in writing studies at Saint Joseph's University, I've been working as a foreign correspondent in South Africa, covering the entrepreneur and food beats.

I've lived and worked internationally for the past several years, and South Africa was one of the most moving, complex, warm, beautiful, and impactful places I've been to.

I had the privilege of interviewing female refugee entrepreneurs, Makatleho Maseko, a woman operating the first formal restaurant business in her township, a sommelier with a wine & paint side hustle, countless people working on the issue of youth unemployment (SA has the highest unemployment rate in the world), and the inspiring Miles Kubheka and his work with WakandaFoodAccelerator at the nexus of food, water, and energy. You can read more about him and the entrepreneurs he works with in the linked article.

I witnessed the lasting effects of apartheid, particularly in the socio-economic sphere, but I also saw the impacts of Madiba's legacy. I thought a lot about what it means to be willing to die for what you believe in.

As I had my last mind-blowing, Pan-African food meal at the extended table at Yeoville Dinner Club (@Yeovilledinnerclub), I listened to host Sanza Sandile talk about his mission to infuse celebration back into the dining table while sharing the foods and the neighborhood he cherishes. According to Sandile, during the 27 years Mandela was in prison, dinner time in his household was rushed and somber. His grandma and others in their community in Soweto didn't feel like having celebratory meals as the struggles around them persisted.

Mandela's release from prison wasn't just about his liberation but the collective liberation.

I'm so grateful to South Africa and the people I met along this transformative journey. I laughed, cried, and left deeply moved by the resilience and vision of the entrepreneurs I met.

This experience has already empowered me to stand up for minor injustices I've witnessed or been a part of since. I'm still percolating on how this experience might impact my career and the types of clients I work with.

Growth isn't a business goal.

It's a nebulous concept ripe with unchallenged assumptions like "all growth is good" and "a successful business is one that's growing."

Growth for growth's sake is shortsighted.

Ask any business that's struggled to keep up with demand, seen its product and people suffer as a result, and ultimately taken a hit to its brand reputation.

Growth decisions require a nuanced perspective, where growth results from broader organizational values.

This kind of growth is smart, sustainable, and strategic.

Are you curious about how to frame growth in your organization or business? What are more meaningful goals?

I was recently a guest alongside Sundays CEO Ashley Chang on Amanda Berlin's The ABerlin Agency, Inc., Strategy of Change roundtable discussion.

Please listen to it, and let me know your thoughts.
