It’s been 5 months since my stage 4 breast cancer diagnosis and I’m thrilled to report my treatment is working and I’m tolerating it well. I can’t tell you how grateful I am for all of the support I’ve received from my personal and professional network.

I thank God every day that I’m navigaging this as a sober person. It keeps me sane and present for myself, my girls, and for everyone in my life. When I was diagnosed on January 25th, I had a day or two where I thought my dreams for life were over at age 49. I’ve since come to realize that they’re bigger than ever and I still have so much to give in this lifetime.

To that end, I’m back at my alma mater, the U of MN, for cancer treatment (you can follow that journey here: Instagram.com/boldsobriety) and recently joined the Medical Discovery Team on Addiction Philanthropic Advisory Council supporting the pioneering work being done at the U on addiction and mental health. Last week we gathered to celebrate raising $1 million for seed funding for the research at a dinner event hosted by fellow board member Chef Andrew Zimmern along with Chef Antonia Lofaso. The evening brought together some of the best minds and biggest hearts in the mental health and addiction community. And I had the best f*cking steak of my life.

Thank you again for all of your love and support. Please reach out to me, Peter Hubbard, CFRE or council chair Heidi Bausch-Ryan, PsyD, LP if you want to learn more about this important work.

One year ago I was celebrating 10 years of being breast cancer free.

A week ago I was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, just shy of my 11th anniversary which would be today.

The paradox is I feel healthy, vibrant, and my spirit is bright and I know I have a long road ahead of me where I won’t feel so great. I’m just trying to stay present because in this present moment I feel well and I have everything I need. And I’ll take 50 degrees and sunny in a Minnesota winter.

The love, prayers, and outpouring of support have lifted me. The notes, texts, calls, flowers, coffee, tea - you name it - have meant the world to me and I know I couldn’t do it without you. It’s a gift to get to hear from people that span my entire life. I’m so grateful for all of you.

I have every reason to believe I’m going to be one of those people where their cancer disappears and I will live a long, healthy life. I have so much more I want to contribute to our beautiful world. I invite you to hold that belief with me and for my girls.

Love, Lisa
