Highlights
🏡 Building Homes for New South Wales 🏡 Given NSW's commitment to deliver 377k new homes by 2029 under the National Housing Accord, it was unsurprising that housing featured a huge part in the FY24-25 NSW Budget delivered today.
Housing affordability and availability are critical challenges, especially in Sydney, which ranks among the least affordable cities globally. Without action, we risk becoming a city without young people and essential workers.
Key updates:
🚄 Transport Oriented Development Program: The NSW government will commit $520m in new infrastructure to support recent planning reforms for increased housing around eight transport hubs across Sydney.
🗺 Planning system: Investment of $555.5m for a more efficient planning system and to increase the speed in which development applications are approved. Long approval times affect development feasibility and NSW's planning processes fall short of that compared to its sister states and territories.
🏡 Family and DV support: $5.1b will be invested in 8,400 social homes of which half will be prioritised for victim-survivors of domestic and family violence.
👩🏫 Key worker support: $655.1m towards making nurses, teachers, police officers, paramedics and other essential workers afford their rent across Sydney and regional NSW.
🛠 Renter protections: $8.4m towards developing and enforcement of greater renter protections.
🏝 Combatting homelessness: $527.6m for emerging housing and homelessness support services.
