Highlights
The USDA BioPreferred Program is the rare consumer product certification that requires external testing of the formula submitted, which makes it very powerful. However, I am finding it very hard to achieve a 100% biobased result. Not through lack of trying.
I'm working on a formula with 10+ ingredients and for each one I have contacted the supplier to ask if it is 100% biobased. Almost all don't supply this information. They will say that it's natural or uses a natural feedstock like palm oil. Only a few have done the biobased testing. Thank you, Croda, Inolex, Colonial Chemical, Inc., and P2 Science, Inc.. Others have only done it for some of their ingredients, or for none.
This leaves me with a 99% biobased test result for my client's formula with every ingredient checked for natural origin. Clearly one or more of the ingredients is not 100% biobased, but which one? I can only find out by doing the testing myself, or formulating only with ingredients that I know for sure to be biobased. This is very painful.
Cosmetic ingredients suppliers, please do the test. It's not expensive, about $500 per ingredient, which should be negligible on your P&L. I for one will be very thankful!

Kimberly-Clark to go natural forest fiber-free!
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) reported that Kimberly-Clark adopted a new policy to use only recycled paper pulp for its tissues. Will Procter & Gamble follow?
In its press release, it announced that "Kimberly-Clark is setting a new ambition to be 100% Natural Forest Free across its product portfolio. The company expects to be more than halfway to this goal by 2030."
I have been using fully renewable Seventh Generation products for years now. It's slightly more expensive, but there is no significant difference in performance. It seems like a small step to take to move away from brands such as Charmin and Bounty that use pulp from old growth forests.
