Recursion and Exscientia are merging. Feels like a seminal moment in the field of AI-enabled drug discovery & development. The reason both companies sit with deeply undervalued pipelines is because investors still do not view “AI enabled Biophama” as something special or unique. AI Biophama is Biophama. Meaning, investors still only want to know: What’s the pipeline? How’s the Balance Sheet (I.e., how will you fund all those great promises)? Today’s transaction solves for both of these. Focuses the near term pipeline catalysts (10 pivotal readouts over next ~18 mos). And, strengthens the Balance Sheet ($850M+ of cash on hand). With an added arsenal of partnership-driven catalysts that dwarf anything previously seen in terms of potential payouts (i.e., the proverbial “free call option”). ONLY if/when these pipeline catalysts pay out, will investors compare/contrast success of AI enabled biopharma vs success of “plain ole” biopharma. And perhaps only then will future AI biopharmas garner a premium valuation. But only if AI Biopharma can indeed deliver on its years-long promise to deliver game changing medicines faster and cheaper. This is exactly how it’s supposed to work. Results matter! Talk and promises are free. A new (pivotal?) chapter begins in the world of AI-enabled biopharma. Good luck and congrats to both teams!
Super insightful chart from Michael Kantrowitz at Piper Sandler. S&P500 (i.e., proverbial “Da Market”) continues to set new records while below the surface more and more companies suffer. Meaning “Da Market” is increasingly led by a shrinking pool of larger and larger companies. For instance, Cons Disc, Healthcare and Staples sectors are up nearly double digits YTD but the median stock in each of these sectors is down YTD. Even bigger divergence in performance in Communications and Tech sectors. Hopefully very obvious to all that this is not sustainable. Only unknown is “when” will this reverse?
