A lot of people are talking about how ChatGPT went to 1M users in 5 days.

Its a typical bias when it comes to overnight success - we ignore all the hard, invisible work that preceded the overnight success.

For people the saying goes for every overnight success story you hear of there were 10 years of hard work behind.

For ChatGPT it's the same - the previous GPT models laid the foundation and were iterated upon until they ultimately became ChatGPT.

The GPT-1 paper was released in 2018 (Can't remember if the model itself was ever made public, I believe so), GPT-2 was made available to the public in 2019, GPT-3 in 2020 and then ChatGPT in 2022.

It doesn't make the 1M users of ChatGPT in 5 days less impressive, but we should acknowledge that the hard work has been going on at OpenAI for a while both in terms of iterating on the tech side but also on the marketing/adoption side.

A lesson that is supremely important but that I always fail at is:

Always work smarter, if you simply work harder you will either fail, die or end up having to work smarter either way. So just start working smarter from the get go.

The tricky part is of course when shit hits the fan it's hard to see the smart way to work and working harder will seem like the easy route. But it's a trap, always work smarter. Repeat after me, always work smarter not harder.

Now please if you know some hypnotist that can hammer this into my brain with 9 inch nails, let me know.
