CREATIVE DISRUPTION: How 12 Creatives on 5 Continents Rose to the Challenge of the Pandemic

Earlier this year, I interviewed creators around the world whose work was severely disrupted by the pandemic, but who responded by doing something new and creative.

They created new artworks, new products and services, new income streams, new audiences and customers, and even whole new businesses.

I focused on the creative sectors that have been most disrupted – including theatre, music, TV and film production, in-person live events and experiences.

I also collected stories from some creative fields that didn’t necessarily get so much media coverage, but which were also severely affected – such as teaching retreats, experiential marketing, photography and tattoo art.

To get a global perspective on the pandemic, I recorded interviews with creatives on five different continents – in London, Prague, New York, Austin, Nashville, Santa Cruz, Johannesburg, Mumbai, Tokyo and Melbourne.

In this article you can read how each of them faced COVID DISRUPTION and came up with a CREATIVE RESPONSE, plus a KEY INSIGHT from their story.

And... I've embedded the audio podcast episodes covering each story with an in-depth interview, as well as my own insights gained from coaching creatives throughout the pandemic.

(You can also hear the whole CREATIVE DISRUPTION season on my 21st Century Creative Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Spotify etc.)

One thing I’ve said from the start of the pandemic is that I hope we all come out of it with more options than we had beforehand. I’ve done my best to collect ideas about what those options might be, and share them with you.

With the ongoing economic crisis and what’s left of the pandemic, we are no means out of the woods. So I hope you find my guests’ insights helpful, and their stories as inspiring as they are to me.

A big thank you to my guests for sharing your stories: Steven Kunis, Earl Abrahams, Harrison Winter, Brandon Bloch, Lagan Sebert, Amrita Kumar, Kay Lock Kolp, M.Ed., Charlotte Abroms, Laura Davis, Nicky Mondellini, Ichi Hatano.
