Highlights
Sharing a memorable moment from our sold out event last weekend, celebrating the opening of #DiDi with another community buyout—part of our initiative to support award-winning narratives in film. We had the privilege of hosting a virtual discussion with the legendary Joan Chen who offered profound insights into her role as Chungsing in the film, a character that resonates deeply with her experiences as an immigrant mother of two daughters. Joan also reflected on the strides we are making towards better representation in the entertainment industry.
Joan Chen is an internationally acclaimed actress, director, and producer with a career that spans over five decades. Originally from Shanghai and now a beloved figure in San Francisco, Joan first rose to prominence in Chinese cinema before making significant marks in Hollywood with iconic roles in Bernardo Bertolucci’s The Last Emperor and David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. Celebrated for her exceptional talent and her trailblazing role as an Asian actress in Western cinema, Joan's work has profoundly influenced the portrayal of Asian characters, enriching the film and television landscapes with authentic, nuanced representation. FUN FACT: She was also a former S.F. Film Commissioner (appointed by then Mayor Gavin Newsom)
During our conversation, Joan highlighted the strength and unity of our community today and expressed optimism about the growing ecosystem that continues to support both established talents and emerging leaders in the independent film and television industry.

Jon M. Chu’s fireside chat, hosted by Awkwafina to promote his new memoir 'Viewfinder,' is an inspirational story for anyone who dares to dream. As the youngest of five children with parents running a Chinese restaurant (Chef Chu’s in Los Altos, CA), Jon's journey began with an early passion for the creative arts. He mastered the art of conveying emotions through images, dance, and music, navigating the highs and lows of early success and failure as a student filmmaker. Inspired by his mother, classmates, and Asian heritage, Jon took bold risks to carve his own path. His confidence and talent not only led him to success in Hollywood but has also granted him the opportunity to open doors for others who look like him.
It was a delight serving as a community partner to City Arts and Lectures and the SF Film Commission in promoting this event with Jon to the AAPI Community and more young, aspiring artists. Together, we showcased the incredible creativity thriving in the Bay Area. The future continues to look very bright in our backyard.
