It's been a challenging but invaluable experience working at Capital One this past year as a Lead Engineer. I cannot wait for the work to become public in an upcoming release of the Capital One iPhone app.

I don't yet have any commitments for the new year so now is your earliest opportunity to get in touch.

I have been primarily at the helm of technology companies in finance to bring organisational change, establish software engineering teams and manage operations in software delivery.

When Matt Farrugia shares his opinion, I listen attentively.

I have worked alongside Matt on software delivery so I've seen him in action and I know he is a master of his craft.

He is thoughtful, measured, experienced and wise. He expands my knowledge and makes me question my assumptions.

I have noticed what Matt says in his opening statement so his post grabbed my attention.

In the last few years a new breed of consultant has arrived. The fractional CTO, CMO, COO, etc. If there is a C-suite acronym for it, there is probably a fractional version of that acronym now too.

He continues:

I see descriptions of fractional CTOs as a cost-effective way to manage and oversee a technology team. If you want that, go for it - it's basically a freelance part-time Engineering Manager. However, it's not really the value sweet-spot of a fractional CTO IMHO. The real value is in experienced-based advice and feedback: for the minimal outlay possible, how can you make the best quality decisions for your startup with the goal of solving for speed of iteration?

I get a sense that someone might feel the need to jump on a CxO title so as not to be characterised antiquated or to match their skillset to the descriptions that Matt describes above. I believe this muddling of the waters can lead to unnecessary frustration that neither helps an individual land a CxO role that is a good fit nor the companies looking to benefit from a CxO role. Continuing this trend will only diminish the importance of the CxO role in the future.

Matt's post does a good job giving an answer (his answer) to what value hiring a CxO brings. It should help companies increase their chances at hiring a CxO that is a good fit. Equally, it will help individuals that have the skills and experience to come forward, knowing that both will be put to good use.

If you are hiring for a CxO, I suggest you read Matt's post, evaluate whether you do need a CxO or a Manager/Lead and update your job description accordingly.

If you do fit the profile of a CxO, Matt's post can act as a springboard when you pitch the role to a potential startup.

If you are unsure whether the CxO is a good fit for you, Matt's post should help you find the answer and potentially open the door to more opportunities for you.
