Maryna Sulym

Photographer - Art Director

Maryna Sulym is the creator and lead of the "Local Foreigners" project, a photographer, and author who focuses on migration narratives.2 She came to the UK in 2014 when war started in East Ukraine, accompanying her husband who had a job at Barclays in London.3

As an immigrant from Ukraine, Sulym started the "Local Foreigners" project to challenge negative representations of immigrants in the media and spread awareness of the diversity and complexity of immigration.13 The project aims to present immigrants as locals by showcasing their everyday lives, families, hobbies, studies, and work.1

Sulym's work includes photographing people who have moved to Edinburgh from other countries and made the city their home.1 She has also traveled around the UK, interviewing immigrants in Northern Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, supported by an Arts Council Grant.3

Currently, Sulym is the Director of Local Foreigners and works as a Freelance Photographer & Videographer.4 Her project continues to record stories and experiences of immigrants in the UK, established as a response to negative media representation.5
