Absolutely LOVED this story by Drew Lindsay. Check it out! ❤️

Community superhero and hillbilly lesbian, L.B. Prevette tells it like it is.

"Prevette — who’s whip smart and quotes from writers like Ursula Le Guin and the Rev. Martin Luther King — sees philanthropy as decidedly less grand. “We’ve got to stop hyperintellectualizing things and just care about people.”

It's time to go back to the basics. Showing up and caring for each other-- the most revolutionary act of reclaiming community.

Last year, a devastating mass shooting on a Half Moon Bay farm exposed the deplorable living conditions endured by our farmworkers—people crammed into shipping containers without access to running water, in one of the wealthiest counties in our nation.

In the wake of the tragedy, local leaders delivered passionate speeches about their commitment to affordable housing. Now, with everything in place, thanks to ALAS and Mercy Housing—funding secured, MOUs signed—the planning commission is scrambling for excuses to stop the 40-unit housing project for elders.

“It’s just too tall, there’s not enough parking…can't it just be somewhere else, perhaps near a farm, not in our downtown?"

I have attended these meetings and wanted to share one of the testimonies that broke my heart–

"I’ve been a Farmworker for 49 years. I arrived in the US at the age of 14. I have experienced all the obstacles that an immigrant meets in this country. The two biggest, most difficult, are the language barrier and transportation. I live on a ranch far from Half Moon Bay, so I don't have easy access to the services that the city provides. I don't even know where the food stores are because I don't leave the ranch. I’ve spent nearly my entire life there.

I appreciate the person who gives me housing and work. But the proposed project at 555 Kelly would change my life. Mostly because it's in the city center. Living there would let me get to know the place where I've lived all my life and connect me to services."

Join me on May 14th at 7pm at the Ted Adcock Community Center for the next commission meeting.
