Five things I learned from rupturing my achilles that applies to my business.

2024 started with a pop... 4 days into the honeymoon year and I ruptured my achilles. For those that don't know, it's a 4-6 month healing process to get back to walking and running again. We were meant to be hiking the andes and breaking into the North American market.

🏆 Goals stay the same, but plans change Start with Plan A and get to a plan that works (credit Ash Maurya). 4 years ago we applied this mindset to Element Human. This year it came in handy in my personal life. The main takeaway here was reminding ourselves what the high level goals were and either reversing order or adjusting for the situation we are in today. We did both.

⏳ Time heals most things We love moving fast, but moving slow and deliberate allows us to rebuild stronger so we can move faster. 4 weeks in a cast, 4 weeks in a boot, and 10 weeks in a brace, all while doing physio. It's regimented. It takes time. It builds a practice. We have had 4 resets in Element Human. They each took time and each took learning and implementing new practices.

❤️ Growth is best done with those who support you There tend to be two types of responses to a disruption, muck in or find an exit. I'm lucky to have found people that muck in from my team, family, the local community and most importantly, my wife. Keep looking for those people to surround yourself with.

🤔 Use the difficulty Michael Caine often references this. Take whatever the situation is and however bad it is and try to find a way to use it to your advantage. When the cast went on, the jokes began. After all, I just scuppered our honeymoon Plan A so didn't really have a leg to stand on (groan). This approach helps everyone realise and reset around the new reality.

🙏 Ask for help and be thankful Sometimes we can get caught up in our own lives and plans. I personally hate being an imposition on others when I need help. It's important to recognise when you need help, but also that help comes in many forms. It's equally important to recognise those who helped and do so in a way they really feel appreciated. I miss these signals sometimes and a personal injury helps hone the professional response.

2024 is shaping to be an interesting year. Follow for more as I share the ins and outs of growing personally, growing Element Human and standardising measurement for the #creatoreconomy with Behavioural Learning Models.

Why attention matters in advertising. A quick introduction to Karen Nelson-Field PhD, pioneer of the #attentioneconomy and marketing effectiveness scientist.

Here are a few takeaways from our discussions and her work:

🌏 Attention is universal Karen proposed Attention as the first universal, cross-platform metric. No matter the environment, attention can be tracked with eyes on ads and applied to compare different media opportunities.

👀 Views are bought. Attention is earned. Thanks to eye-tracking on real world audiences that opt in through their mobile devices, we are able to differentiate between an ad that is viewable vs an ad that the individual actually looked at.

❤️ There are many types of Attention Active, passive and attention curves... Karen's work offers more and deeper signals to machine learn against business outcomes. It's exciting stuff for optimizing media investment.

🎓 Educate Openly - a rising tide raises all boats The reason I really rate Karen Nelson-Field PhD is that she is generous with her time and transparent with her data and findings. To clean up ad waste, improve return on ad spend, and challenge an industry stuck in traditional metrics, it takes a healthy mix of humility, vulnerability, and courage.

Follow along as I learn in the open about Marketing Effectiveness from the industry leaders.

We explore the key principles and how to apply those to Element Human's new era of measurement for the #creatoreconomy.
