Pretty shocking that the last comprehensive, nationwide study of special Ed funding was based on the 1999-2000 school year, and exciting that Mark Lieberman reports (link in comments 👇) that a new one is in the works. It won't be published until 2028, though.
I wonder if the new study will drill into the costs of specific special ed needs and how those needs change over time. For example what is the lifetime (K-12) cost of treating dyslexia for a single student? Do most students diagnosed with dyslexia receive services for the remainder of K-12? When students don't receive treatment for the remainder of K-12, do they stop receiving the treatment because they no longer need it or because the district can't afford it any more? Do districts that invest more in supporting students with certain special education needs in the early grades have fewer students who need those supports in upper grades?
I'm curious what questions those with the most depth in special ed finance are most interested in getting national data on?
If Andreesen Horowitz could build a company to spec, this would be it.
