Spending the last few days of “vacation season” diving into this book that’s been on my shelf for several months! Onboarding into a new organization, especially as an executive, requires you to blend action with learning, identifying your key network, and learning the written culture and the “unsaid” culture. Having a team who is there to support you, without an agenda, can be key to success.

I think many of these lessons can be taken into account for people who are moving into their first people manager role… the success and characteristics that got you HERE are not the same, and may hinder you, from getting THERE.

My takeaways:

  1. Take the time to listen. To your team, to your stakeholders, to your customers.
  2. Identify the “state” of your organization (start up, turnaround, acccelerated growth, realignment, sustained success) in order to determine your first steps
  3. Find the history tellers and the people who can share “how things get done”
  4. Know your strengths, but more importantly recognize your areas of weakness. We all tend to double down on our strengths but there are likely areas where you may feel incompetent. Don’t forget you are learning, and learning comes with discomfort;)

What do you wish you focused on more as you moved into your first leadership or executive role? What helped you focus? How did you come up with small wins?
