Melissa Leger-Abraham

Assistant Professor Harvard Medical School

Melissa Leger-Abraham is an Assistant Professor of Microbiology at Harvard Medical School and an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital.12 She holds a bachelor's and Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry from Université de Montréal, Canada.1 After completing her postdoctoral studies in structural biology at Harvard Medical School's Department of Biological Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology, she became proficient in biophysical characterization of proteins and structure determination using NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography.13

Dr. Leger-Abraham's research focuses on studying mRNA translation in parasites that significantly burden global health, including Leishmania, Babesia, and Plasmodium organisms.2 Her laboratory uses methods in molecular and structural biology, such as X-ray crystallography, cryo-electron microscopy, and nuclear magnetic resonance, to characterize the protein synthesis machinery of these parasites.4 The long-term goal of her research is to harness this information to develop safe and effective antiparasitic drugs.4

She is married to Jonathan Abraham, an associate professor of microbiology at Harvard Medical School, and they both share a passion for structural biology and infectious diseases research.5
