There were 2 moments of vulnerability that really shaped my professional life:

1️⃣ One time, one of my bosses admitted that he wasn’t ready for a meeting, and that he was worried because he was unsure of how he would handle it. 4 hours later we logged into the meeting in which he had to present, and he completely smashed it!

For context: this boss is probably the best boss I ever had. I deeply admire him. True Marketing genius, I have never seen a brain like his in my entire life.

That comment coming from someone like him allowed me to feel empathy for him, to sincerely offer my support to help him prepare for the meeting, but most importantly it really strengthened our bond. If the person I admire the most in the company, and in my entire professional life, is also having issues to meet deadlines in a very demanding context, I’m also allowed to struggle. It took some guilt and pressure away from my shoulders.

What did I learn from this?

He’s also human, and he’s doing his best.  ..........................

2️⃣ Another time, I twisted my ankle. I was in a lot of emotional pain at that time because my father was in hospital, and I was far away from him so I couldn’t take care of him. When one of my team members asked what had happened, I had 2 options:

A) Share the politically correct answer: I twisted it while crossing the street because I was on my phone (which was true) B) Share the raw honest answer: I’m in deep pain inside, and this twisted ankle is just a reflection of that (which was also true)

I shared B.

What did I learn from this?

I’m also human, and I’m doing my best.  ........................

Vulnerability is often seen as weakness in the workplace. But without vulnerability there’s no connection.

Vulnerability is the only bridge for connection.

Vulnerability isn’t about oversharing or being weak; it's about being authentic and open. And it’s crucial in the workplace because it builds trust, enhances communications, fosters connection, encourages growth and boosts resilience.

At the end of the day, we are all human, and we are all trying to do our best.

Have you ever been vulnerable in the workspace? How was that experience like for you?

Sincerely,

Mercedes
