On this evening 5 years ago, there was a mighty team launching Disney+ into what was a public beta in the Netherlands. We chose that region because we had a full stack team located there and we knew there would be a nice diversity of devices in the wild. The idea was to catch and fix as many bugs as possible before the big launch. One thing that I’ll never forget is the culture the NL team had, and made some of us US folks a part of. This photo is of a “family dinner” that night to celebrate the milestone.

Entertainment has been bundling and unbundling and bundling and unbundling and bundling for decades. It’s a great tactic to hook people into a value proposition and drive better lifetime value. But it presents lots of user experience challenges along the way that probably aren’t for free... ie

‘What to buy from who?’

‘What happens if I buy it on website x? How do I activate the rest of the services in the bundle?’

‘Where do I manage my account?’

‘What’s my password again? Will it work everywhere now?’

‘Who do I call for support?’

‘How do I cancel one of these things? How do I cancel all of these?’

‘I have one of these services already. If I get this bundle do I have to cancel and re-subscribe?’

‘What about my recommendations?’

Lots of product challenges for the teams that have to bring bundles to market, and consumers too.

Btw, I recently had an opportunity to sit down with Vidya Dinamani and @heathersamarin on the Product Rebels podcast. It’s a pod about product people navigating their worlds. We get into some lessons learned an some wins won, both the hard way.
