I grew up in a fatherless home and witnessed first-hand the fallout that can be generated by one mans struggles getting the better of him.

Aged 27, I tracked him down to an address in the south of Spain.

For the very same reason that you would write a letter instead of sending a text, I decided to walk a pilgrimage from my place of birth in South London to his spanish address.

I walked thousands of miles with a tent on my back, and had 100’s of conversations about men, masculinity and mental health.

What I discovered was the near universality of the Father Wound.

If it wasn’t folks fathers, it was brothers, son's, friends, colleagues or complete strangers. I never had to scratch very deeply to find some tragedy involving the impact of a struggling man.

The question that initiated my journey was "what's was wrong with my father?" but over the months this evolved into what I believe is a much better question - "what must have happened to my father?"

Indeed, what has happened to men in general?

Men report lower life satisfaction than women, and the largest cause of death for men under 50 is suicide.

Suicide.

And yet 33% of men show any interest in workplace wellbeing initiatives?

What is going on?

In two weeks time, I’m going to deliver a training where I'll be sharing my story and the insights it brought me, before offering a new framework to understand the nature of the challenge facing men and, more importantly, what you as a a Workplace Wellbeing leader can do to actually help them.
