Miguel González-Andrades

Miguel González-Andrades is a distinguished clinician-scientist serving as an ophthalmologist in the Ophthalmology Unit at Reina Sofia University Hospital and a research scientist at the Maimonides Biomedical Research Institute of Córdoba, University of Cordoba. He also holds the title of adjunct scientist at the Schepens Eye Research Institute and Mass Eye and Ear (SERI-MEEI), Harvard Medical School. Miguel is currently the Chair of the Young Section of the European Society of Ophthalmology.

With a focus on tissue engineering, Miguel's groundbreaking research led to the development of an artificial human cornea during his clinical training and residency. His contributions include utilizing various matrices and scaffolds such as fibrin-agarose scaffolds, decellularized porcine corneas, and collagen scaffolds. He coordinated a significant multi-centric phase II clinical trial assessing artificial human corneas based on fibrin-agarose biomaterials. Additionally, Miguel collaborated with esteemed institutions like University College of London and Newcastle University for the advancement of corneal substitutes based on collagen scaffolds.

Complementing his practical work, Miguel has an impressive publication record in top international journals such as Ocul Surf, Sci Rep, Biomaterials, and Nature Biomedical Engineering. He has been recognized with esteemed accolades including the MIT Technology Review - Innovators Under 35 Award, Discovery Channel - Born To Be Discovery Award, and the Knights Templar Award from the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Moreover, Miguel's academic achievements include receiving the Pareja Yebenes’ prize for best student, the prestigious Claes Dohlman Fellowship Award, and several other notable awards in medicine and ophthalmology.

Miguel González-Andrades's educational background is truly remarkable, with a diverse range of qualifications. He completed his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) at the Universidad de Granada and pursued advanced degrees such as a Master Degree in Manufacturing of Advanced Therapy Medicinal Products and a European Master in Transfusion Medicine and Advanced Cell Therapies. Furthermore, he holds a Postdoc in Ophthalmology from Harvard University and a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from ThePowerMBA. Miguel also engaged in various specialized programs and training sessions in neurobiology, tissue engineering, and more.
