Miguel Morales

Associate Professor at University of Washington

Miguel Morales is a Professor of Physics at the University of Washington, specializing in observational cosmology.13 He has been with the university since September 2008, initially as an Assistant Professor and later promoted to Professor in September 2019.1

Morales' research focuses primarily on measurements of the Epoch of Reionization (EoR), studying the universe's first stars and galaxies from about 13 billion years ago.3 He leads the Radio Cosmology group at the University of Washington and has contributed to the development of advanced radio telescopes such as the Murchison Widefield Array in Western Australia and the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array in South Africa.34

In addition to his research, Morales is passionate about making complex scientific concepts accessible to the general public. He authored a seven-part series on quantum mechanics for Ars Technica, aimed at explaining the subject without using mathematics.24

Morales received his Bachelor of Arts in Physics from Swarthmore College (1989-1993) and his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of California, Santa Cruz (1996-2002). Before joining the University of Washington, he worked as a Research Scientist at MIT from August 2002 to July 2008.1
