Have you ever shared a brilliant idea at work, and then your boss tells you, "That's a great idea, why don't you go ahead and do that!"
Whoops, just created more work for yourself 🤦♂️
This happened to Steve Bartel in 2010 when he was an Engineering Manager at Dropbox. Steve suggested that Dropbox needed a Data Science team ▶ his VP of Engineering agreed ▶ and boom, Steve earned himself a second full-time job as a Recruiter🥂😐
Through his new recruiting responsibilities, Steve gained an appreciation for the work that recruiters do, and he's since translated this appreciation into his company Gem which is an all-in-one recruiting platform: ATS + CRM + AI Sourcing + Scheduling + Talent Marketing & Events + Career Site.
Steve joined me and Tyler on our podcast What Worked to chat about:
- The future of AI in recruiting
- How the candidate experience starts with the recruiter experience
- Why recruiting is a strategic function vs a cost center
And some of my favorite tangents:
- The era of startups named "Zen..."
- How Steve got creative to acquire the gem.com domain
- startuphiring101.com
It's an awesome conversation. Please check it out and share it with friends.
