I’m thrilled to be speaking on Thursday, August 15th on a panel with Nada (Osman) Hanafi, Nikki Bruce, and Rachel Robinson about Innovation and Women’s Health with MassMEDIC in advance of the 6th Annual Women's Health Innovation Series’s Summit in Boston in September.
You might not realize it, but if you work in healthcare, you're likely already contributing to women’s health. Consider this:
💔 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵: Did you know that heart disease is the leading cause of death for women in the U.S., yet only around 1/3 of clinical trial participants are women? 🦴 𝗢𝗿𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗮𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀: 70% of osteoporotic fractures occur in women, yet much of the innovation in orthopaedics has historically overlooked gender-specific needs. 🧠 𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: Nearly 60% of Alzheimer’s patients are women, and the disparity in research funding for women’s neurological health is staggering.
2024 marks a defining moment for Women’s Health and MedTech. We’re witnessing an unprecedented surge in investment and interest. The momentum is bolstered by initiatives like the recent Federal Executive Order on Advancing Women’s Health Research and substantial investments from visionaries like Melinda French Gates.
𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲? 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵? How do we capitalize on this momentum to drive lasting change and improve human health?
Join us on 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝟭𝟱, 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰, for an insightful discussion on the pivotal role we all play as MedTech leaders in advancing women’s health and health equity. From groundbreaking innovations to identifying untapped opportunities, learn how you can make a difference.

In today's dynamic workplace, inclusivity isn't just a buzzword, it's the cornerstone of exceptional team performance. As leaders, our role is pivotal in creating environments where every voice is heard and valued. Adam Grant's "Hidden Potential" offers profound insights on this topic.
What differentiates teams, those that are good from those that are truly great? As demonstrated through their results, those who shatter records and make the impossible, possible? This statement from Grant in Chapter 8 sums it up well.
“The best teams aren’t the ones with the best thinkers. They’re the teams 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘂𝘀𝗲 the best thinking from everyone.”
This is harder in practice than on paper because it requires the humility of multiple leaders in the organization. Many of us recall the remarkable story of the 33 Chilean miners rescued after being trapped 2,300 feet underground in 2010. Grant details the leadership and team dynamics that made this successful and innovative rescue possible. With this example in mind, as a leader – ask yourself these three questions:
👉 Are innovative ideas being stifled too early? Filtered out before getting to you? 👉 Are you taking multiple shots on goal when de-risking your most challenging problems? 👉 Are team members and leaders supported in contributing outside their “swim lane” toward established team goals?
When leaders cultivate a culture of inclusivity, they not only foster innovation but also empower their teams to achieve unparalleled success. By actively seeking diverse perspectives and encouraging open dialogue, we unlock the hidden potential within our teams that enables them to perform at a level greater than the sum of the parts.
Here are three practical steps for leaders to embrace inclusivity: 𝟭. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲 𝗦𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘂𝗲: Encourage open communication and ensure that all team members feel safe to share their ideas without judgment. 𝟮. 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗗𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀: Recognize that diversity of thought drives innovation. Seek out and embrace different viewpoints, experiences, and backgrounds. 𝟯. 𝗘𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 𝗘𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: Provide opportunities for all team members to contribute meaningfully. Celebrate their strengths and offer support where needed.
As you dive into your summer reading, I highly recommend "Hidden Potential" for its actionable advice and inspiring examples. Let's commit to being leaders who bring out the best in our teams, making inclusivity a driving force for success. 🌈✨
