I recently got charged twice for the Influenza test I had to get in February. It's ONE single test, a single specimen, a single swab of the nose and it tells you (like a single pregnancy or covid antigen test) if it's strain A, B, or negative. You do not run it more than once or use more than one specimen for the result.
Practices get to bill twice for this test. BCBS says they're aware that it is one single test being billed twice and there's nothing that can be done about it "because it's for two strains". There is literally no logic in it- it's just another way to make money.
I've been told, "it is what it is". Well, what it is is further symptomatology of a dysfunctional privatized healthcare structure. We waste billions (if not trillions) of dollars on "it is what it is" instead of problem-solving and making things more efficient for patients and providers.
We are the ONLY developed nation that does not provide Universal Healthcare. And in case you don't know what that means- for example, it would mean that if you get sick or hurt and go to the doctor or the ER you would never receive a single bill. Certainly not a bill with double charges, fraudulent efforts to just make a little more off of you, or sent to the debt collectors!
Why are smart compassionate people deterred from working in healthcare or staying in health care? We are expected to care for everyone equally- but how many people don't have insurance (or do) feel they are treated equally and not treated based on their payor source??? As a provider I know that we base our management, recommendations, and plans on your payor source to minimize your out-of-pocket expenses... so in the end, how can care be equal???

I have spent many hours working on my Master's researching and writing papers on reducing inequality in healthcare due to bias based on gender, race, and sexual orientation, but the most ubiquitous inequality I see EVERY DAY starts with four words: "who is your insurance?"
