The first piece of fundraising collateral I suggest founders create is a Master Plan.

Read the Secret Tesla Master Plan, still published on the Tesla website, to get an idea for the format.

The Master Plan is your primary strategy document.

It outlines the step-by-step process for how you will build a big company.

It should be 1-2 pages.

It should be authentic to you. Do not write what you think investors will want.

As a founder, you are putting all your time and financial eggs in one basket. You wouldn’t be doing that if you don’t see a big payoff at the end.

You already invested in your startup. Explain why. Explain that payoff.

Do this before creating a pitch deck or financial model.

If you create a deck and model, and write a Master Plan after, you will likely need to redo the deck and model to reflect the bigger and more powerful story in the Master Plan.
