I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: Generative AI with Large Language Models from Coursera!
Peter Thiel once said:
“Every moment in business happens only once. The next Bill Gates will not build an operating system. The next Larry Page or Sergey Brin won’t make a search engine. And the next Mark Zuckerberg won’t create a social network. If you are copying these guys, you aren’t learning from them.”—Peter Thiel, Zero to One
Well, as much as I respect Peter Thiel’s accomplishments and thought leadership, I have to disagree with this one.
The world out there—contrary to what Peter Thiel claims—does not belong to ZERO-TO-ONE inventors of their segments. Actually, there is a whole graveyard of inventors.
Want proof?
Did Google create the search engine industry? No! Do you know how many search engines there were when Google entered the market? 17! They were the 18th player in the market!
Was the iPhone the first smartphone? No! Remember Blackberry, Nokia?
Did Microsoft invent the Graphical User Interface? No! Xerox did, and decided to shelve it! Then Steve Jobs saw it, created the Mac, and Bill Gates copied it. (To be fair, this is a bad example, since Xerox didn’t actually invent the segment, merely invented the technology)
Was Facebook the first social network? No! Remember MySpace, Orkut?
Was Gmail the first webmail? No! Yahoo Mail, Hotmail.
Was the iPod the first MP3 player? No!
Was Zoom the first video conferencing software? No. Citrix, GoToMeeting we’re already out there.
Did Tesla invent the electric car! No! That was invented back in the 1800s!
YouTube, WhatsApp, Google Docs, Instagram, Waze? All acquisitions!
