Last week I posted about Angellist's quarterly report on startups and venture capital. This week, Carta released its own report on the state of private markets. Let's see how their data on startup valuations by round compares:

Series Seed: $13.3M (Angellist data was $18M) Series A: $40M (Angellist data was $45M) Series B: $90M (Angellist data was $110M)

As you can see, there is a fair amount of discrepancy between Carta and Angellist, especially in Series B valuations. This is likely because Angellist is a newer competitor in cap table management and has less companies on the platform overall, but especially later stage companies since startups tend to onboard to a platform after their first priced round and rarely switch. Carta's data is likely more robust given their market share so I tend to believe their data is a more accurate reflection of the market as a whole.

A common question we get at Decrypted Law from founders is "once I raise funds, can I pay myself?". If a company has raised enough money to pay its employees salaries, including the founder, then yes. However, that raises the next question - "how much should I pay myself?".

Pilot, an accounting service for startups, just published its Founder Salary Report for 2023. Here is a breakdown of some of the numbers:

Average Founder Salary: $121,000. Average founder salary for a startup that raised $1M-$3M: $110,000. 54% of VC-backed founders pay themselves between $50K and $150K per year. Of the founders who paid themselves between $100K and $200K annually, 93% of them were VC-backed and only 4% were bootstrapped.

This should give founders an idea of what they can pay themselves once they raise their first couple million of dollars to fund their startup. In my experience, investors don't want founders worrying about paying their rent or utility bills. Founders should be worrying about building their company.
