As SEOs, what are our moral obligations when it comes to darker keywords? 💭
The Washington Post’s article “Here’s what Americans want to kill, according to Google” had me wondering about the moral implications of SEO content for those darker keywords.
We always focus on ranking content that meets the user’s intent, but what happens when that intent (or query) goes against our moral and ethical beliefs?
If you had to target a keyword that suggested harm to a reader or others, would you
a) Find a different keyword to target
b) Reframe the topic in a way that gets the reader to seek help
c) Both a and b
d) None of the above – explain in comments
Personally, I see this as an opportunity to help. Nothing I can do can change that some people are searching for these topics. But I might be able to steer the reader toward seeking help. Simply changing the query won't change the intent, but offering a resource that can make a difference might.
Shout out to Vince Nero for inspiring this post with his idea on what we can learn from The Washington Post's article as it relates to DPR.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this article and if you've ever faced this dilemma in your work.

Google is rolling out Manual Penalties and deindexing ENTIRE SITES.
I said it before. This update is not messing around.
It's still early, but so far, this seems to be affecting AI spam.
If you've been affected, I'd love to take a look.
