You may know me here as an HR Executive and a proponent of human-centric workplaces. What you may not know about me is that I am also an animal rights advocate.
I thought long and hard before writing this post because like you I am overwhelmed by the suffering of human and non-human kin across the world.
But something sinister has been happening in the United States (again) last month, funded by our tax dollars. I just learned about it recently and have been horrified ever since. I wanted to create awareness so you can take action if you are so inclined.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) conducts regular "roundups" of wild horses. These costly and cruel roundups are done via helicopters. The inhumane chase leads to the destruction of herds, foals being ripped from their mothers, and deaths caused by broken necks and legs.
Why is this happening? Technically, the American mustang is protected by the “Wild Free-Roaming Horses and Burros Act” (Public Law 92-195), but the BLM has exploited a loophole under the guise of "land conservation". What's curious is that the number of wild horses has actually dropped from hundred thousands who used to roam the West to a mere 70,000. At the same time, the grazing need of the cattle ranching industrial complex is gobbling up their habitat.
What happens to the mustangs once they are removed from the Wild? There are currently around 64,000 wild horses and burros languishing in federal holding. 64,000! Many of the horses are being funneled into the "Adoption Incentive Program" which incentivizes k!ll buyers. Another loophole. It is illegal to sl@ughter horses in the US for human consumption, but not in Mexico and Canada where these horses are being sold to.
