10 years ago I chose a platform to stand on in futures work - it was obvious to me, and less obvious to most working as part of our industrial complex.. Climate change and the transition to a zero-carbon society.

We found out in the 1800s that CO2 would heat the atmosphere (thanks to Eunice Newton Foote) and that there would be a greenhouse effect (Joseph Fourier). We saw the discipline of foresight - my chosen discipline to explore futures - was established in many regards by Royal Dutch Shell - mostly to cover up the effects of burning carbon-based fuels. The problem has been here for a long, long time and we have blinkers on.

Today we see mass denial on warming while at the same time people can't insure their properties from natural disasters, crops are failing, cities are melting in the heat, and the water-energy-food nexus is under mass duress.

We like our lives. We focus on the now. We juggle stock portfolios to ensure wealth and a financial position for our families to live good lives. We struggle to know what our future generations will struggle with but now we have a better idea.

We must listen to scientists more than politicians. We must focus on transition and not profit. We must take things seriously and have hope as the energy to make the brave decisions today for a better world tomorrow - and hope for a resilient world in our futures. The economy will be stringer and more resilient. The world will have the chance to stop warming at current rates.

This is still the platform I am standing on - and it's burning.

This video from Carl Sagan is worth your time today.

"We are all in this greenhouse together..."

Please share your ideas on our zero-carbon futures in the comments and let's unpack this.

Friday thought…

Everyone is shouting ‘we want AI to solve our problems’ but they are not investing in defining problems in their entirety, and realizing that ‘solutions’ are rarely solved with magic software.

People, process, data, governance, risk, operationalization, support and iterative transformation should be hyped above all else.
