Nilesh Amritkar is a distinguished professional in the field of microbiology with a robust academic background and extensive experience in environmental and food safety. He earned his PhD in Microbiology from the Foods and Fermentation Department of the Institute of Chemical Technology (formerly UDCT Mumbai), where he developed a strong foundation in microbial sciences that would propel him into a leadership role in the testing, inspection, and certification industry. Presently, he serves as the Managing Director at Envirocare Labs, a position through which he has significantly impacted the landscape of food safety and quality management across India.
With over two decades in the field, Nilesh has adeptly blended his technical expertise with a commitment to education and knowledge dissemination. He has represented the Testing, Inspection & Certification industry in various committees of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and has taken on the role of a National Level Resource Person for several prominent training programs, including FoSTaC training programs and the Food Safety Management System (FSMS) for catering services. As a master trainer with FSSAI, he has been fortunate to train more than a thousand Food Safety Officers and Designated Officers throughout India, fostering an environment of enhanced safety standards and practices in food supervision.
A strong advocate for continual education, Nilesh initiated a one-year Post Graduate Diploma in Food Safety & Quality Management in partnership with IGNOU at the Envirocare Center for Continual Education & Research. His commitment to education reflects his firm belief in the empowering nature of knowledge, which he intends to share with future generations of professionals in the industry. His journey in developing one of India's leading environment and food testing laboratories has been marked by his successful establishment of accreditation processes according to ISO 17025 and ISO 17043, aligning standards with the regulations set forth by key governmental bodies such as the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF & CC), FSSAI, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Export Inspection Council (EIC), Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), and Agricultural Marketing (AGMARK).
In addition to his managerial and training responsibilities, Nilesh is passionate about technical writing. He has authored several publications in national and international journals, showcasing his extensive knowledge and research in the field. His blog contributions on LinkedIn provide further insight into his thoughts and opinions about current trends and innovations in food safety. Beyond his professional endeavors, he enjoys traveling and exploring cultures across the globe, which enriches his understanding of diverse perspectives. Nilesh's leadership extends beyond his managerial role, having held administrative positions in various association bodies such as the Association of Food Scientists and Technologist of India (AFSTI), Association of Indian Oil Industry Leaders (AOIL), and All India Food Processors Association (AIFPA). His scientific representation on committees of FSSAI, FDA, BIS, and Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) reflects his dedication to advancing food safety and quality in India. Furthermore, his experience as a Lead Assessor with NABL India and the UAE Dubai accreditation body has afforded him insightful exposure to the functioning of quality testing labs across the Indian subcontinent and the Middle East. In this capacity, he continues to share practical knowledge as a lead instructor for the Preventive Controls Qualified Individual (PCQI) course, tailored specifically for Human Food and Animal Food under the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) of the US FDA.
