Telemetry Pipelines: 500,000 events per second in an agent running on c5d.4xlarge? We all love data, so here are the CPU utilization results in order of performance:
✅ 62% - Edge Delta ✅ 79% - FluentBit ✅ 83% - Vector (Datadog) ❌ Failed - FluentD ❌ Failed - OpenTelemetry ❌ Failed - Filebeat ❌ Failed - Logstash ❌ Failed - Splunk UF ❌ Failed - Splunk HF
(Failed agents listed in order of performance before failure).

🚧 Ingesting, indexing, scanning, processing, rehydrating, logs-to-metrics, dropping metrics dimensions/values, filtering, sampling, pre-aggregation, enriching, metadata size, uncompressed vs compressed volumes, data retention, continuous queries, monitors, infrastructure costs, compute unit costs, per GB, per 1000 events, data points per minute, spans, events, the list seems almost endless... and I haven't even mentioned credits. 💸 💸 💸
We think a lot about pricing. Of course pricing strategy is important for every tech company, but those of us that work on #observability know it can get quite complex even from the other side as a customer. I noticed recently that one of the vendors used "Per ingested or scanned GB" and I thought that was an extremely tricky way to hide costs for the customer. This will not be a pleasant surprise.
The average gross margins for a typical SaaS company should be about 70-85%. Here are the TTM (last 12 months gross margins or latest available for those acquired) for some of the top observability vendors:
Datadog - 81.4% Splunk - 79.7% New Relic - 76.8% Elastic - 74.1% Sumo Logic - 67.6%
Why does this matter? Ultimately a vendor cannot come out with a pricing model that will drastically reduce their underlying margins. What does that mean for these old established vendors that have a very widely adopted platform? It means for the most part they can shift the cost around for the customer.
For the last three years, the Gross Margins for Datadog and Splunk have consistently increased. This means that despite coming out with "New Pricing Models" they are actually making more on average per customer.
So, as a customer, what is the most significant trend that enterprises in the industry are adopting to control these costs? Observability Pipelines is far and away the most comprehensive toolbox to give you complete understanding and control of your data.
📈 Analysts have estimated that the number of #devops, #sre, #security, and #observability teams adopting pipelines tech is looking to increase by over 300% within the year.
