Highlights
Thanks to Advantary Capital Partners and its partners VISTRA and TriNet for co-sponsoring this AI in Healthtech event last night in San Francisco.
This was a continuous learning exercise for me, given that healthtech has always been "that other industry" in my career. Coming up in enterprise software, exaggerating a claim of a feature or its availability was always something you could chalk up to an innocent mistake or say, "it's on the roadmap!" (never me; it was the other salespeople.) In healthcare, exaggerating claims of "life-saving" properties can get you a visit from a Federal Prosecutor for fraud. These tech companies need evidence from clinical trials and outcome studies to make claims we casually do in business software. To my great pleasure, the go-to-market challenges of these companies are entirely similar to those of enterprise software, so I can help. The overlap of AI, software, and healthcare is complete. For enterprise salespeople who haven't worked in healthcare, it's time to start looking here.
Expertly moderated by Nick Larson from Silicon Zombies Podcast, three CEOs of Advantary portfolio companies flew in to share their insights on how AI in Healthtech is changing everything. Raja Sundaram from Plethy, Michael Johnson from ASD.me, Rajeev Dutt of Luminas Health and AI Dynamics offered important insights into how AI enables the change driving their high-growth companies. Stephen Kuhn from Advantary offered insights on the investing environment and how our GTM practices help our portfolio companies. The room was filled with aspiring entrepreneurs, investors, and service providers. Knud Balslev, Shmuel Silverman from Advantary supported our tech and innovation practice. Todd Farnham expertly ran the event for us.
Especially inspiring are the stories of the successes and challenges of entrepreneurs like Vasili Razhnou, Shashank Shekhar Keshri, Coert Du Plessis (杜康), and Karan Samel. You also meet great potential collaborators like Stella Kim and Hesam Jafari. Aside from the high-quality content presented, the wine, food, and networking are invariably fun.
It was a great learning event with inspirational stories from three emerging companies and their leaders. Heathtech entrepreneurs, do you want to be on the dais next?

Navigating the Transition from Founder-Led to Sales-Led Growth: Strategic Insights for Leadership
Moving from founder-led to sales-led growth is pivotal in a company’s lifecycle. Missteps can stall growth at the Seed or Series A stage, often costing founders time, effort, and equity.
Why Founders Excel in Early Sales
- Product Mastery: Founders know their product inside out; every bracket and comma in code.
- Industry Knowledge: They understand their vertical deeply.
- Personal Networks: Initial deals come from friendly audiences willing to try something unproven.
- Customization: They tweak the product for early customers, offering tailored solutions and free consulting.
Challenges of Transitioning to a Sales Team
When bringing on the first sales reps and a VP of Sales, it's crucial to document and onboard the team with insights from the founder-led sales journey.
Building a Collaborative Culture
- Open Communication: Regular meetings and updates bridge the gap between founders and the sales team.
- Shared Goals: Align sales team goals with the company’s vision and strategy.
Developing a Strong Sales Onboarding Program
- Comprehensive Training: Provide thorough training on the product, industry, and sales processes.
- Hands-On Learning: Include role-playing scenarios and shadowing opportunities.
Setting Clear Expectations
- Define Targets and KPIs: Align early sales targets and KPIs with the overall company strategy.
Fostering Customer Relationships
- Customer-Centric Approach: Maintain a customer-centric approach throughout the transition.
- Articulating Value: Ensure the sales team can clearly articulate the product’s value proposition.
Investing in Tools and Technology
- Playbooks: Create simple but comprehensive playbooks.
- CRM Systems: Implement robust CRM systems to track and manage customer interactions effectively.
Monitoring and Adjusting Strategies
- Regular Reviews: Regularly review sales performance and gather market feedback.
- Agility: Be prepared to pivot strategies based on data and insights.
Leadership Involvement
- Accessible Founders: Founders should remain accessible to the sales team for guidance.
- Active Participation: Leadership should participate in key sales meetings and customer interactions.
Scaling the Sales Team
- Gradual Expansion: Expand the sales team gradually to maintain quality and consistency.
- Hiring Right: Focus on hiring sales professionals with relevant industry experience and a good cultural fit.
The Critical Role of Founders
Keeping the founder involved in early sales-led efforts is crucial until the new sales approach proves effective. Thinking, "I hired a sales team, so they should sell better than me," is a red flag. Active participation and guidance are key to successfully navigating this phase.
