Highlights
I am so proud of the Mama Aweza (Swahili for ‘Mothers Can’) project in Western Kenya that has saved vulnerable children from wasting and malnutrition. Wasting is the most immediate and visible form of malnutrition and children diagnosed are thin, their immune systems are weak, and they are vulnerable to development delays, disease, and death. My son and I believe you cannot save the world but, you can impact a few people in a big way. With that philosophy in mind, we began a collaboration in 2020 with the University of Washington (UW), Global Gut Health Child Survival Team in Seattle. After years of Zoom meetings across time zones, we finally got a chance In June to meet face-to-face with the Kenyan care teams and young patients impacted by our program support. It was so gratifying to see what our sponsorship does to impact young lives. The Mama Aweza program is a collaboration between UW and the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). The program implemented a mobile malnutrition monitoring system and has enrolled >1,000 mother-infant pairs across two counties in Western Kenya. The mobile health monitoring system empowers mothers to assess their children for malnutrition by measuring upper arm circumference multiple times per week. Infants with measurements indicating malnutrition are sent to nutrition clinics for treatment. Our program outcomes are impressive; 95 children were identified and treatment was initiated. Out of the 95 children, 78 have recovered, 8 completed treatment but are still under observation and 9 are currently in treatment. Join us in helping Kenyan infants by making a small donation to a great cause.
