STOP MAKING THE ANXIOUS GENERATION MORE ANXIOUS

I recently ran into a young woman from my neighborhood, and our conversation quickly turned to her job search. She described her ongoing struggle with frustration: “I’ve been applying since January, like a lot of my friends. It’s hopeless. Honestly, we’re all screwed.” This is a smart, highly capable person—someone you’d be lucky to have on your team. And I’ve heard this same lament from many other young people I know.

Young people today often feel isolated, lonely, or inadequate, as numerous statistics and studies have highlighted. Large student debts and limited job prospects only exacerbate their already fragile state. Jon Haidt’s excellent new book, The Anxious Generation, explores how a tech-driven life and other factors have contributed to this crisis.

Don't make it worse.

When I need a plumber, I ask someone I trust for a recommendation. I don’t post a vague ad online saying, “I Need a Rock Star Plumber” (seriously, can we retire that rock star thing already?) and leave it running long after the job has been filled (if there was even a job). These digital cattle calls are generating hundreds of applicants while eroding the hope of young people and adding to their anxiety. Seeing a job post with 200 applicants can be disheartening. And if they’re fortunate enough to win this lottery and secure an interview (likely a Zoom call), why does it have to involve a lengthy parade of interviewers from every conceivable department, including the person who waters the plants? All to snag that junior account executive role.

Come on.

This is a unique madness.

Surely there’s a better way to open doors without making candidates jump through flaming hoops. You’re not hiring brain surgeons—unless, of course, they’re now looking to create marketing-driven social posts.

Remember, business isn’t separate from society; it’s a vital part of it and has a deep impact. We have a crucial role to play here, and it’s not one that can be left to bots and process apparatchiks. Trust me, the future won’t be kind if we keep heading down this path.

Which brings me to a Cicero nugget:

“What society does to its children, so will its children do to society.”

Let's stop this crap, shall we?

STICKS AND STONES…

It's been quite a few weeks south of the border, culminating in an assassination attempt, Biden's historic resignation (after much kicking and screaming), and the emergence of a new Democratic presidential nominee who has already raised over $100 million. The press will have no shortage of material for its 24/7 media circus.

Now, onto the next exciting chapter. Cue the KHive. Enter Kamala Harris.

Here's where I step in as a campaign strategist.

How should Harris position herself and the party? What should be the tone and manner of her communication efforts? Should she continue trading insults and barbs with The Donald and engage in an arms race of attack ads?

No.

Let's flip the game. Do the opposite. There's no need for more teeth-gnashing or nasty partisan sniping. It’s all so exhausting. The country is divided, frustrated, and cynical enough. It's time for a massive chill pill.

Stick to substantive issues: abortion, jobs, inflation, immigration, foreign policy, and more. Avoid getting drawn into a mudslinging melee. You'd be surprised how frustrating this can be for your opponent. If he attacks with renewed force, don't take the bait. Ignore him. Reduce him to a madman full of sound and fury in an echochamber. Steer clear of the futile whataboutism style of debate that leads nowhere. Unleash a psyops of steely stoicism on an adversary who is famously not in control of his emotions. Then watch him unravel.

Smile. Stay even-tempered. Stick to facts, not emotions. Bring back decorum to public discourse.

In other words, take the high road.

There's no traffic there right now.
