Paul Benkeser
Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology
Paul Benkeser is a Professor and Senior Associate Chair in the Wallace H. Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University.13 He has been a member of the Georgia Tech faculty since 1985 and was one of the founding faculty members of the Coulter Department in 1998.3
Career and Research
Benkeser's early research focused on therapeutic and diagnostic applications of ultrasound.3 However, after joining the Coulter Department, he redirected his efforts towards enhancing undergraduate biomedical engineering education.3 His current interests include integrating problem-driven learning and global experiential learning opportunities into the curriculum.3
Achievements and Contributions
In 2019, Benkeser, along with colleagues Wendy Newstetter and Joseph Le Doux, was awarded the Bernard M. Gordon Prize for Innovation in Engineering and Technology Education by the National Academy of Engineering.2 This prestigious award recognized their work in fusing problem-driven engineering education with learning-science principles to create a pioneering program that develops leaders in biomedical engineering.2
Education and Professional Affiliations
Benkeser received his BS from Purdue University and his MS and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, all in electrical engineering.3 He is a member of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Society, and American Society for Engineering Education, and a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.3
Additional Information
Benkeser has been active in engineering accreditation activities for ABET since 2002, serving in various capacities including program evaluator, EAC Commissioner, and member of its board of delegates.3 His research and education endeavors have been funded by grants from NIH, NSF, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and the Whitaker Foundation.3
