I was asked an interesting question today: “How will AI impact headcount in professional services over the next few years?”
While there are clearly many factors that will impact headcount, it is clear to me that AI is going to create a whole new set of capabilities for our profession. It’s not just about efficiency, it’s also about quality of decision making and value add.
AI will allow practitioners to very quickly outline frameworks and sets of possible solutions to challenges. This broadness of “thinking”, when created from appropriate data sources and prompts will drive consideration of a more diverse suite of possibilities than would have been possible through conventional means in a similar timeframe. As we all know, greater diversity of thought leads to better quality decisions.
There is also a knock-on effect for job satisfaction for the professional. How much more engaging to carefully consider the design of appropriate prompts and the resulting range of outputs, as a starting point, than citing the relevant legislation or professional standard. (Consideration of these should, of course, be included as part of the evaluation process, where relevant).
In summary, my view is that AI will transform the work performed by our professionals and allow for more value add from an existing team. This is the springboard for exciting growth for those who are bold enough to embrace it.
